Announcement of the Technology Catalogues for Power Generation and Energy Storage in Vietnam 2023

19:49 - 02/12/2023

Within the framework of the Vietnam-Denmark Energy Partnership Program phase 2020 – 2025 (DEPP3 Program), on November 29, 2023, the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in collaboration with the Danish Energy Agency organized the Announcement Ceremony for the 2023 Vietnam Technology Catalogues for Power Generation and Energy Storage.

The event was held with the participation of over 200 delegates from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), several related ministries, the Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Embassy, the Vietnam Electricity group, the Vietnam Oil and Gas group, the Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries group and its subsidiaries, research institutes, universities, businesses, international organizations as well as domestic and international experts.

The event was organized online with the coordination of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA), Ministry of Trade and Industry as well as the Danish Embassy and the Danish Energy Agency.
The event introduced the 2023 Vietnam Technology Catalogues for Power generation and Energy storage, comprising two publications: the Technology Catalogue for Power Generation and the Technology Catalogue for Energy Storage, covering renewable fuels and the conversion of electrical energy to other forms of energy (Power-to-X). These technology catalogues provide crucial input data for the establishment of Vietnam Energy Outlook 2023 report, scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2024. These products are anticipated to be valuable tools in the formulation and implementation of energy and electricity developments, such as the Power Development Plan VIII, the National Energy Master Plan, and other related plans in ensuring energy security and its sustainable development.
At the event, Mr. Pham Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, stated: “Despite the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020-2021 period, under the comprehensive and resolute guidance from the Government to simultaneously control the pandemic and pursue economic recovery, Vietnam still achieved a GDP growth rate of 8.02% in 2022. This was the highest growth rate in the period of 2011-2022, surpassing the growth forecast outlined in Resolution No. 01/NQ-CP of the Government. Furthermore, Vietnam committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, showing the Government’s determination to transition from traditional fossil energy sources to clean energy, reducing greenhouse gases and addressing climate change.”
Mr. Pham Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, stated at the event
According to the representatives of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority, it is forecasted that the demand for energy and electricity in the following years will continue to increase. In such context, the support from the Danish Government, the Danish Department of Energy and the Danish Embassy through the Vietnam-Denmark Energy Partnership Program for the period of 2020-2025 (DEPP3) is indispensable.
Within the framework of the DEPP3 Program, the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority collaborates with the Danish Energy Agency to develop a Technology Catalogue for Power Generation and Energy Storage. The product unveiled at the event is the third updated version.  The previous versions published in 2019 and 2021 have received high acclaim.
The 2023 Vietnam Technology Catalogues for Power Generation and Energy Storage will include several updated and additional content such as nuclear power technology, data from various electricity generation technologies, … These technology catalogues will provide essential input data not only for the establishment of the Vietnam Energy Outlook 2023 report but also serve as powerful tools in the formulation and execution of the Power Development Plan VIII and the National Energy Master Plan as well as other related plans in ensuring energy security and its sustainable development.
